Third graders designed a building with a specific purpose such as a hospital, school, hotel, restaurant, or a library. We were inspired by architecture form around the world that use columns, domes, and arches. We then constructed a small model of the building using clay additive and subtractive techniques. Brightly colored glaze was our final touch! Students also created backgrounds using colored pencils to pair with their buildings.
Third graders focused on their initials and interests for their monograms! Students looked at different typography and calligraphy for letter design and incorporated personal symbols about themselves in their design.
Students were inspired by various ancient cultures such as the Aztecs, Mayans, and Greeks and the various monuments they created. We also looked at monuments in the United States and why they were created including Mount Rushmore, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and the Lincoln Memorial to design our our monuments for a specific purpose or place. Students also looked at installation art from Jeff Koons and Yayoi Kusama for an interactive element to their work. Using pop up techniques and colored pencils, they were able to create their masterpieces!
Third graders looked at many different quilt patterns and used their knowledge of geometric shapes to design their own quilt. After looking at quilts across history and the quilt artist Faith Ringgold, students were able to use a classic pattern or create their own. They cut and glued their own paper quilt together which will be assembled and put on display outside their classrooms!
We discussed how music has mood and how we can represent that using colors, lines, and shapes. They filled in their wet bogus paper using chalk pastels while listening to three songs from different genres of music. The following class, we sealed in our drawings using mod podge.
Take a trip with third grade! After looking at different artists and examples of postcards, students thought of a place that they strongly connected to in a positive way. It could be home, a favorite vacation spot, a family member's house- the possibilities were endless! They then created a postcard that would entice people to visit their place and used crayons for outlining and watercolors to add color!
Third grade has been discussing different points of view and perspectives in their reading and writing classes. In art, we watched videos and looked at photos from the perspective of insects, birds, and astronauts. Students then drew a scene from a new and interesting perspective.
