Students used their brains to do some serious innovating! Each student went through an idea development process to invent their own shoe. Students were to consider both the function and aesthetic quality of their shoe and some fantasy elements were incorporated. In order to sell our shoe, students designed a print advertisement that would be found in a magazine. We looked at different ways to sell our product including typography, color schemes, slogans, and visual elements.
Sixth graders in every elective used poetry they wrote in English class for an interdisciplinary project. In art, they used watercolors to create an illustration to accompany their poem and looked at Shel Silverstein for inspiration.
Using our study of plant structures from observational drawing, sixth graders invented their own plant species! They had to consider where it would live, what it would do, and how it would look. We then sculpted them out of clay and used tempera paint and Mod Podge for color.
Students used their knowledge of visual literacy and communication to visually represent a certain word. How could we use typography and visual elements to communicate what a word meant just by how it looked?
