After becoming familiar with shoes from observation drawing, students used their brains to do some serious innovating! Each student went through an idea development process to invent their own shoe. Students were to consider both the function and aesthetic quality of their shoe and some fantasy elements were incorporated. In order to sell our shoe, students designed a print advertisement that would be found in a magazine. We looked at different ways to sell our product including typography, color schemes, slogans, and visual elements.

Sixth graders came up with a mantra or resolution for the new year (2017) and used different typography and watercolor techniques to achieve their results.
Sixth graders honed their observational drawing skills by selecting any object in the art room to draw. Students used composition, proportion, and value to draw their object in the most realistic manner. Then they personified their object and created either a comic strip or cover of an adventure their object character had.
Sixth graders designed a positive message to be displayed in our school hallways. We used recycled scraps from the laminator (like transparencies) and colored sharpies to create a stained glass effect for our work.
Sixth grade practiced different watercolor techniques and invented their own color inspired on something from real life.
Students selected a historical figure or person of influence as inspiration for this clay unit. After researching their life, where they lived, and how they contributed to history, students designed a place setting complete with food if they invited this person over for a meal. Various clay hand building techniques were used such as wedging, slab rolling, and attaching clay to itself. While their work was being fired, students studied color theory and practiced mixing the paint colors they would need to best imitate their food. Name cards were the finishing touch for the place settings!
Sixth graders selected a book they enjoyed reading and designed a new cover for it. Looking at artists like Mikey Burton and Henri Matisse for inspiration, students used cut paper method to create clear, clean symbols.

Sixth graders in every elective used poetry they wrote in English class for an interdisciplinary project. In art, they used watercolors to create an illustration to accompany their poem and looked at Shel Silverstein for inspiration.
